Triangle Region Loses its Largest Public Company Headquarters

In a $26 Billion all-stock transaction, Progress Energy has been acquired by Duke Energy.  The new company makes Duke Energy the nation’s largest utility and will remain headquartered in Charlotte, NC.  With the acquisition and move to Charlotte, the Triangle will lose its largest public company headquartered in the region.  Though layoffs are likely in the acquisition, sources say that the new company will “maintain substantial operations in Raleigh.”
